Design for franchises and chains: visual consistency without killing the local personality

Franchises and chains have a design problem that very few solve well: how to be recognizable in all their locations without each opening feeling like a clone branch.

The customer wants to know they're on your brand. But they also want to feel they're on a site with its own personality.

Why total consistency is a mistake

The temptation is to standardize everything. Same flooring, same chairs, same project executed identically everywhere. It simplifies the operation, but the result is noticeable: a space that could be in any shopping mall conveys exactly that. And that doesn't generate any connection or social media buzz.

Which elements must be fixed and which can vary

Fixed elements: the main color palette, the typography, the most iconic materials, the type of lighting that defines the atmosphere, the basic arrangement of the service elements.

Variable elements: secondary materials, references to local culture, scale and distribution of furniture according to the space, decorative elements and supporting graphics.

The way to find out in your case: if you remove that element from the photos of the premises, does it still look like your brand? If the answer is yes, it can vary. If it's no, it's fixed.

The role of the space design manual

For this to work in practice you need a document with concrete specifications: exact references to materials with supplier and code, lighting criteria, types of furniture with dimensions, adaptation guides for spaces of different sizes.

With that document, an opening in another city can be executed while maintaining standards without the local team having to guess what is expected.

Indicative budget

  • Space design manual (existing concept, 1-2 formats): 6,000-14,000 euros
  • Complete multi-format manual with adaptation guides: 14,000-28,000 euros
  • Consistency audit of existing premises: 3,000-7,000 euros
  • Opening project applying manual: 8,000-16,000 euros design + execution
  • The system pays for itself in the second opening and generates returns in all subsequent openings: speed, consistent quality, lower cost per opening.
