Commercial interior design in Marbella: what works for the international luxury client

Marbella is not just any market. Customers who walk into a business on the Golden Mile or in Puerto Banús have been to some of the best establishments in the world. If your business isn't up to that standard, they'll notice. And they won't come back.

What makes Marbella different from other markets?

The international luxury client in Marbella, whether a resident, a second-home buyer, or a high-spending tourist, has expectations of the finest spaces in the world. Quality must be genuine and evident. Mediocre materials are noticeable. Poorly designed lighting can ruin a space that, on paper, boasts excellent materials.

What works in Marbella

High-quality natural materials. Stone, wood, marble, linen, leather. No imitations. Customers accustomed to the originals can recognize the copies even if they don't say so.

Design with its own identity. The international client has seen many spaces decorated according to the same Instagram trend guidelines. What surprises them is something they haven't seen exactly the same way elsewhere.

Attention to the exterior and the interior-exterior transition. Marbella has a great climate. The terrace, the garden, and the exterior access points are as much a part of the business space as the interior.

Night lighting. The Marbella clientele goes out at night. A space that seems reasonable at 2 pm looks like a parking lot by 9 pm, leaving money on the table.

Privacy and perceived exclusivity. Part of luxury is not being exposed. Semi-private and secluded spaces work very well for the high-end client.

What doesn't work

Obvious and ostentatious luxury. Gold, black marble, enormous chandeliers without context. The sophisticated client reads that as brand insecurity.

The typical Mediterranean aesthetic. Colorful tiles, whitewashed walls, terracotta pots. In Marbella's premium segment, it's overdone.

Ignore the international customer. Signage only in Spanish, website only in Spanish, staff who don't speak English well. Marbella has a large international customer base.

Indicative budget for projects in Marbella

  • Commercial interior design, medium-high level (restaurant, shop, clinic): 1,200-2,200 euros/m²
  • Complete design project (concept, renderings, technical project): 12,000-28,000 euros
  • Branding integrated with the space: 8,000-18,000 euros additional
  • Exterior intervention and interior-exterior transition: 15,000-45,000 euros depending on scope
  • The cost of a subpar space isn't just mediocre design. It's failing to engage with high-net-worth clients.
